DESCRIPTION
Grgich Hills Estate is in Rutherford, Napa Valley. It was founded in 1977 by Mike Grgich, the winemaker behind the Chateau Montelena Chardonnay that won the 1976 Judgment of Paris. This Cabernet comes from the estate's own vineyards in Rutherford and Calistoga.
The 2021 is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with 10% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, aged 20 months in French oak. Critics describe cassis, black currant, graphite, clove and a touch of smoke and mocha. 2021 was a strong Napa vintage, and in magnum this will age slowly for many years.
Decant it for an hour or two and serve at 62-65F in large red wine glasses. Pour it with ribeye, prime rib, braised short ribs or aged cheddar. A magnum pours about ten glasses, so it suits a dinner party.
Decanter 95, Jeb Dunnuck 92 points.
Bottle size: 1.5L (magnum)
