Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge has been made in France since 1880. It's cognac blended with the essence of bitter oranges, which is why it tastes richer and less sugary than a plain orange liqueur. The red ribbon and wax seal haven't changed in a long time.
Chocolate orange, vanilla, almond and orange peel on the nose. On the palate, the bitterness of the peel gives it depth, the cognac gives it warmth, and there's a touch of brown sugar, coffee and spice. Long, citrusy and smooth.
This is the bottle that makes a better margarita, the classic "Cadillac" version, and it belongs in a Sidecar or poured over crêpes Suzette. It's also very good on its own, neat or over ice after dinner. If you keep one liqueur at home, this is a sensible choice.
