Dr. Loosen is the Loosen family's estate in Bernkastel in the Middle Mosel, run by Ernst Loosen. The Urziger Wurzgarten, the spice garden, is a steep vineyard above the village of Urzig. Its soil is red, iron-rich volcanic rock and slate, unusual for the Mosel, and the iron is often credited with the spicy note in its wines.
Spatlese means the grapes were picked late, a week or two after the main harvest, for riper fruit. This is a sweet Riesling with low alcohol and racy acidity, with ripe peach, nectarine and a flinty, spicy edge. The sweetness and acidity are in good balance, and the site makes it one of the most distinctive Spatlesen in the Mosel.
Serve it chilled, around 45-50F, in a white wine glass. It is very good with spicy Thai or Indian food, pork with apples, smoked fish and fruit desserts. It also ages well for ten years or more.
