Don Julio González started making tequila in 1942. Sixty years later the company released this añejo to mark it, and it more or less created the luxury tequila shelf you see today.
It's made from Highland agave and aged at least two and a half years in American oak. That's long for tequila, and you can taste it: caramel, chocolate and vanilla up front, roasted agave underneath, a little tropical fruit and warm spice, and a long, soft finish.
Treat it like a good cognac. Sip it neat or over one big cube; it doesn't need lime or salt. Works after dinner, with grilled steak, or with dark chocolate. The tall bottle is the one people recognise across a room, so it's a popular birthday and celebration gift.
