DESCRIPTION
Alphonse Mellot is one of the oldest family names in Sancerre, in the eastern Loire Valley. La Moussiere is the estate's main white, from about 34 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc on marl and limestone, facing south and southwest. The vineyard has been farmed biodynamically since 1999.
The wine is fermented partly in tank and partly in barrel, then rests on its fine lees for seven to eight months. Expect citrus blossom, grapefruit, lemon and a flinty edge, with fresh acidity. It is a fuller, more textured Sancerre than the bright, simple styles, and it rewards a little time in the glass.
Serve it at 48-52F in a white wine glass. The classic match is goat cheese such as Crottin de Chavignol. It is also very good with oysters, fish tartare and smoked salmon.
