90 Points Vinous88

The 1999 Pichon-Lalande has an attractive bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry and light floral scents, although it is missing the mineralite and terroir expression of the best vintages (including the 2016 that I tasted alongside). The palate is rounded on the entry, with supple tannin, gentle grip and a note of licorice infusing the red fruit. There is a pastille-like quality to this 1999, although my criticism is that at 20 years of age it is missing the essence of Comtesse. Balanced, but does not have much to say. Tasted from an ex-chateau bottle at the estate.

89 Points Robert Parker

Tasted at the 1999 horizontal at Bordeaux Index. The ’99 Pichon Lalande has another very straight-laced nose that opens up nicely in the glass with scents of blackberry, cedar, wild hedgerow, a touch of sea salt. Very good definition. The palate is medium-bodied, moderate acidity and weight, introverted or perhaps more accurately, understated with a grainy, slightly savoury/tobacco finish. Salty tang on the aftertaste. Just about ticks all the boxes but no fireworks. Drink now-2018. Tasted June 2009. [Neal Martin, 01/06/2009]
