Chateau Musar is the Lebanese winery of the Hochar family, founded by Gaston Hochar in 1930. Its grapes grow in the Bekaa Valley, the high inland valley east of Beirut, at about 1,000 meters. Hochar Père et Fils is one of the family's red wines and carries the family name.
The blend draws on Cinsault, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon, three of the grapes Musar uses in its reds. Cinsault and Grenache bring red fruit, softness and spice, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure and darker fruit. Expect a medium-bodied red with red cherry, plum and warm spice, a savory edge and fresh acidity. Lively and savory rather than heavy.
Serve at 60 to 64°F in a Bordeaux or Burgundy glass, and give it 20 to 30 minutes of air. It is very good with Lebanese and Middle Eastern food: lamb kofta, grilled chicken shawarma, stuffed grape leaves or roasted eggplant. It also works with roast duck or a mushroom pasta.
