Chateau Montelena's Chardonnay is the wine that put Napa Valley on the world map. Its 1973 vintage beat the best white Burgundies at the 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting, and the winery still makes it in a balanced, restrained style.
Expect citrus, green apple and pear, with a touch of white flowers and a clean, mineral finish. Montelena keeps oak in the background, so it's fresher and less buttery than many California Chardonnays.
Serve it chilled, around 50-52F, in a white wine glass. It's a natural with roast chicken, crab, lobster, grilled fish or creamy pasta. A great bottle for anyone who thinks they don't like California Chardonnay.
