Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré is the second wine of Château Léoville Poyferré, an estate in Saint-Julien on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. It gives you the house style at a gentler price.
The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Critics found black cherry, mulberry, blackberry and incense in the 2019, with floral notes and hints of tobacco. The palate is medium to full bodied, with ripe, supple tannins, freshness and a juicy finish. A serious second wine.
It is approachable now, and it should keep developing for 15 years or more. If you open it young, decant it for an hour. Serve it at 60 to 65°F in a large Bordeaux glass. It is made for roast lamb, a ribeye, duck breast or aged Comté.
