M. Chapoutier is one of the great names of the northern Rhône, and it farms its vineyards biodynamically. This red comes from Hermitage, the steep granite hill above the town of Tain, home to some of France's most powerful Syrah.
Hermitage is Syrah at its most serious. Expect blackberry, black olive, violet and smoky, peppery spice, with a dense, structured palate and firm tannins. Young bottles are powerful, and the wine gains layers of leather and earth over many years.
Decant it for at least an hour, or keep it in the cellar for several more years. Serve around 62-64F in a large glass. It's made for game, braised lamb, venison or beef with a pepper sauce. A collector's bottle from one of France's most famous hills.
