Château Quintus is the Saint-Émilion estate of Domaine Clarence Dillon, the family behind Château Haut-Brion. They bought the property in 2011 and renamed it Quintus, so this 2012 is one of its very first vintages under the new name.
Saint-Émilion reds are built on Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and they tend to be rounder and softer than the Cabernet-led wines of the Médoc. Expect plum, black cherry and spice, with fine tannins and a polished finish. With more than ten years of age, it should be showing some savory, earthy notes too.
Decant it for 30 minutes and serve around 62-64F in a large glass. Good with roast duck, lamb, mushroom dishes or a cheese board. An interesting bottle for anyone who knows Haut-Brion and wants to see what the same family does on the Right Bank.
