Broken Earth makes its wines in Paso Robles, on California's Central Coast, where warm days and cool nights suit Bordeaux varieties. This bottling puts Cabernet Franc on its own, which is less common than it should be.
Blackcurrant and a fresh, pine-needle note on the nose, with oak spice underneath. The palate is full of blueberry, and the tannins are silky rather than grippy. It has the ripeness you expect from Paso, but the herbal side of Cabernet Franc keeps it from feeling heavy.
Serve it a little below room temperature, around 60-62F, in a large glass. Seared lamb is the classic match, and it also works with roast pork, mushroom dishes or burgers off the grill. A good pick for anyone who likes Cabernet Sauvignon and wants to try something nearby.
