DESCRIPTION
Château Léoville Barton is a Second Growth in Saint-Julien, owned by the Barton family since 1826. It has a reputation for classic, honest claret that is fairly priced for its rank, and 2005 was one of the great Bordeaux vintages of its decade.
Cabernet Sauvignon leads, as it does in most of Saint-Julien. Expect blackcurrant, cedar and tobacco, with graphite and a savory edge that comes with age. Twenty years on, a 2005 like this should be entering its drinking window, with the firm tannins of youth softening into something more supple.
Stand the bottle up for a day, then decant it gently to leave the sediment behind. Serve around 62-64F in a large Bordeaux glass. Roast lamb, beef Wellington or a simple steak are the right partners. A serious bottle for a collector or a milestone dinner.
