Black Maple Hill has a cult following among bourbon drinkers, and this Oregon limited edition is one of its harder-to-find bottlings. It's a straight bourbon, so it has spent at least two years in new charred oak with nothing added.
It opens with a big wave of corn sweetness that settles after a few minutes in the glass. Then come cotton candy, baked banana, honey, brown sugar and old oak. The palate starts honey-sweet and thick, a spicy note cuts through in the middle, and the finish is resiny and corny in the best way.
Give it a few minutes before the first sip, or add a drop of water. Neat or on one big cube is the way to go; this is too good for a mixer. A strong pick for a bourbon collector who already owns the usual names.
