Bertani is one of the old names of Valpolicella, and its Amarone Classico is made the traditional way: grapes dried for months before pressing, then a long, patient aging. The 2013 earned a perfect 100 from James Suckling and the top spot on his Top 100 list.
It's big, but it's not clumsy. Ripe cherry and dark fruit, spice, a little earth and smoke, and oak in the background. The tannins are firm and fine, and there's enough acidity to keep all that concentration moving. The finish goes on for a long time.
Open it an hour ahead, or decant it, and serve around 62F in a large red wine glass. It wants hearty food: braised beef, osso buco, game, or a wedge of aged cheese. A serious bottle for collectors, and one that will keep for years.
