Amiral de Beychevelle is the second wine of Château Beychevelle, the Saint-Julien estate famous for the ship on its label. Second wines come from the same vineyards and team, usually from younger vines, and they're meant to drink well sooner.
Expect cassis, chocolate and vanilla on the nose, with some coffee on the palate. Acidity is lively, the tannins are moderate and the finish runs moderate to long. It's classic Saint-Julien: polished and balanced rather than heavy.
Open it an hour ahead and serve around 62-64F in a Bordeaux glass. Drink it with beef or venison, roast lamb or a mushroom risotto. It's a smart way into classified-growth Bordeaux at a fraction of the price of the grand vin.
