This is Nebbiolo from Valle d'Aosta, the tiny Alpine region in Italy's far northwest. Mountain Nebbiolo is lighter and more fragrant than Barolo, and Piantagrossa's "396" is a good example. Please note this listing is sold by the case only.
It's a transparent ruby red with orange reflections. The nose is intense and persistent, floral and fruity, with violet, mountain flowers and small red fruits. In the mouth it's warm, round and balanced, with fine, pleasant tannins. It's a Nebbiolo you can enjoy young without waiting a decade.
Serve it around 60-62F in a large glass. It's very good with mushroom risotto, veal, roast chicken, cured meats or Alpine cheeses like Fontina. Buying a case makes sense if you want a house red for fall and winter dinners.
