Catena Zapata is the family that put high-altitude Argentine Malbec on the map. The Argentino blends ungrafted vines from two very different vineyards: Angélica in Lunlunta and Nicasia in Paraje Altamira. It was fermented in large foudre with some whole clusters and aged 12 months.
The 2023 is a riper, more open year. Violets, plum and cherry, crushed stone and a touch of pepper. The tannins are fine and chalky, there's real concentration, and the finish is juicy and bright. It's structured, but it's not hard work.
Serve around 62F in a large red glass, and decant it for half an hour. Grilled steak is the obvious match, and it's the right one; lamb chops or a mushroom risotto work too. A great bottle for anyone who thinks Malbec is only an everyday wine.
