Broken Earth Petit Verdot 2010 |
The wine presents a rich bouquet of ripe red berries, briars and hints of earth. The densely layered palate is framed by structured tannins and lifted acidity. The Broken Earth Reserve wines are only made in exceptional years, with no release of the 2011 vintage, however the 2012 Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon are both shaping up to be only our second release of these unique Paso Robles wine styles.
The rolling hills of Paso Robles with decomposing soils and ample sunshine provide an ideal climate for Petit Verdot, a variety rarely seen as a stand-alone wine. Unlike its original home in Bordeaux where this varietal can be challenged to ripen fully, our climate is perfect and the resulting wine is packed with powerful fruit. The Bouquet is rich, ripe and loaded with wild berry aromas. The palate is powerful, showing a many-layered complexity with great length of flavour and ripe robust tannins. It is a rare example of an intensely flavoured wine that still exhibits true sophistication. The use of French oak for maturation provided structure and support to an already concentrated wine dominated by dark fruits, vanilla and exotic spices.
This is a sophisticated wine showing the unique juxtaposition of Petit Verdot – power and elegance.
