IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS

James Suckling 98 points - A complex red with blackcurrants, forest floor and mint. Eucalyptus, too. Love the aromas. Full body with ripe tannins that roll on the palate. Very harmonious and precise. Needs four to five years to come together, but already a joy to taste..May/2019

Vinous 96 points - The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve expresses all of the richness of the year while also retaining a terrific sense of energy and vertical lift for such a big wine. Floral notes add aromatic intensity to a core of red cherry jam, pomegranate, blood orange, mint and sweet spice notes. Racy and unctuous to the core, the 2015 has a lot to offer..December/2018

Wine Advocate 96 points - A blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec and 4% Merlot, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour was aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, 90% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it offers a profound nose of baked blackberries, Black Forest cake, Christmas pudding and Chinese five spice with hints of rose hip tea, cedar chest and mincemeat pie. Full-bodied, super rich and wonderfully concentrated, the palate provides a rock-solid frame of grainy tannins, finishing long and spicy. At 15% alcohol, it is a beautifully rich, ripe, opulent expression with bags of compelling freshness to offset all that decadence..May/2019

Jeb Dunnuck 97 points - The flagship is the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve, a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, and 3% each of Petit Verdot and Malbec aged in 90% new French oak. Deep purple-colored, with a brilliant bouquet of creme de cassis, blueberries, graphite, and smoked herbs, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, terrific purity, and building tannins, which become even more apparent with extended air time (I followed this bottle for multiple days). This is the real deal and count me impressed. It’s approachable today thanks to its purity and balance, but given its old-school, classic feel, I’ve no doubt it’s going to evolve for 2-3 decades..February/2019

Decanter 93 points - Very hot weather shortly before harvest resulted in high sugars and alcohols, slightly more than the winemakers here consider ideal. The assertive nose is predictably very rich and opulent, showing burliness and power as well as blackcurrant and blackberry fruit. This is plump, rounded, and fleshy, with immense concentration and hefty tannins. The explosive fruit largely compensates for the discernible alcohol, displaying depth as well as power. A long finish with a chocolatey character..February/2019

When Andre Techelistcheff joined Beaulieu Vineyard in 1938, he tasted the de Latour family’s private wine - what they called “Private Reserve” - from the 1936 vintage. This Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine was so distinctive that Tchelistcheff insisted it be bottled and sold as the winery’s flagship offering. In 1940, Beaulieu Vineyard released the first vintage of Private Reserve and named it in our founder’s honor. The resulting wine became the first release of Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that was destined to become Napa Valley’s first “cult” Cabernet. In 70+ years since, Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has become the benchmark of Napa Valley Cabernet as one of the most collected American wines.

We hand selected grapes from the finest Cabernet Sauvignon vines in our BV Ranches No. 1 and No. 2, originally planted by Georges de Latour in the early 1900s. We focus on clones that yield small berries with the high skin-to-juice ratio needed to make intense, long-lived wines. These chosen vines are deeply rooted in the well-draining alluvial fan soils of the Rutherford American Viticultural Area, considered one of the finest regions of Napa Valley for Cabernet Sauvignon.

At our state-of-the-art winery, dedicated exclusively to Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, we hand sorted the destemmed berries to retain only the highest quality fruit. Winemaker Jeffrey Stambor then fermented one-third of the grapes in new French oak barrels for early integration of fruit and oak character and to enhance the dense, rich texture; the balance was fermented in stainless steel and oak tanks. Following judicious extended skin contact and inbarrel malolactic fermentation, the wine was pressed and returned to barrels for aging. Jeffrey blended the Cabernet Sauvignon with a small amount of Petit Verdot to further enhance the wine’s aroma and flavor spectrum.
