Alexander Valley Vineyards Homestead Red Blend 2016 |
The 2016 is a blend of six of our favorite grapes. Each varietal adds complexity to this well balanced wine. Winemaker Kevin Hall selected Merlot with rich concentration to anchor the blend, then added Zinfandel for spicy notes, Grenache for berry flavors, Mourvedre for additional texture, Cabernet Sauvignon for elegant structure, and then rounded out the blend with Syrah for bright berry flavors and floral aromatics.
Overall, 2016 was a more normal growing season than the last few years. While the drought was still persistent, we received much needed rain over the winter and early spring. The good weather continued through the summer with no damaging heat spikes. Yields were slightly reduced, but the quality and flavor of the grapes were stellar. After harvest the different lots were de-stemmed, fermented separately, then aged in 25% new American and French oak barrels for 14 months. Each individual lot for Homestead Red Blend was picked, fermented and barrel aged separately in order to maximize complexity and broaden the flavors in the glass.
This dark purple wine has complex aromas of black cherry, black pepper, plum, cassis, oak, vanilla and spice. In the glass there are spicy flavors of red fruits, berry, plum, cherry, oak and vanilla. This is a fruit forward wine with nice balance and a long structured finish.
